Roundmans recently completed a major project by delivering 25 million LED bulbs to the Energy Efficiency Management Group (EESL) under the Indian Ministry of Power. This was the largest single government order in the general lighting industry over the past century, marking a significant milestone for the company. The project was carried out in collaboration with Mulinsen Co., Ltd., one of the new owners of Landvous, and was successfully completed by December 2017.
The initiative is part of the UJALA program, which aims to replace inefficient incandescent bulbs with high-efficiency LED bulbs across India. Since its launch in January 2015, EESL has distributed over Rs 280 crore worth of LED bulbs nationwide. The project not only supports energy efficiency but also helps reduce carbon emissions and electricity costs for millions of households.
Roundmans won the contract through a public tender in March 2017, beating numerous regional and international competitors. This deal marked the first major transaction for Landdevans, a former Siemens and Osram business unit that became an independent entity after March 2017. The 25 million 9-watt LED bulbs delivered were designed to provide the same brightness as a 60-watt incandescent bulb, saving enough electricity annually to match the output of a 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant operating 16 hours a day.
Erol Kirilmaz, Chief Marketing Officer at Roundmans, praised the partnership with Mulinsen, calling it a testament to their collaborative success. He emphasized the importance of localized sales support in emerging markets like India, where quick response times are crucial. Lin Jiyao, Executive General Manager of MLS, echoed these sentiments, stating that this project was just the beginning of a promising long-term relationship.
As a global leader in lighting, Roundmans pledged at the 8th Clean Energy Ministerial Conference (CEM8) in 2017 to sell 2.5 billion LED light sources by 2023. If achieved, this goal would result in energy savings equivalent to 75 medium-sized thermal power plants. Thomas Dreier, Head of Global R&D at Landwells, highlighted the environmental and economic benefits of LEDs, noting that modern LED technology combined with smart lighting solutions can cut energy use and costs by up to 90%.
