Roundmans has successfully delivered 25 million LED bulbs to the Energy Efficiency Management Group (EESL), a key department under India’s Ministry of Power. This project marks one of the largest single government orders in the general lighting sector in nearly a century, and it was completed in collaboration with Mulinsen Co., Ltd., which is part of the investment consortium that acquired Osram’s business unit in March 2017.
The initiative is part of the UJALA program, aimed at replacing inefficient incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LED alternatives across India. Since its launch in 2015, EESL has distributed over Rs 280 crore worth of LED bulbs nationwide. Roundmans won the contract through a public tender in March 2017, outperforming numerous regional and international competitors. The company, previously part of Siemens and Osram, became an independent entity after the acquisition and entered the general lighting market with this landmark deal.
By December 2017, Roundmans had fulfilled the order on time, delivering 25 million 9-watt LED bulbs. These bulbs are expected to save as much electricity annually as a 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant operating for 16 hours a day—assuming they are used for four hours daily. This significant energy saving underscores the impact of switching to efficient lighting solutions.
Erol Kirilmaz, Chief Marketing Officer at Roundmans, praised the partnership with Mulinsen, calling it a strong example of collaborative success. He emphasized that the local sales and support teams were crucial in responding quickly to customer needs, which is essential for thriving in emerging markets like India.
Lin Jiyao, Executive General Manager at MLS, also highlighted the synergy achieved through the project, stating that it was just the beginning of a promising collaboration.
As a global leader in lighting, Roundmans made a commitment at the 8th Clean Energy Ministerial Conference (CEM8) in Beijing in June 2017: to sell 2.5 billion LED light sources by 2023. If this target is met, the energy savings would be equivalent to the output of 75 medium-sized thermal power plants.
According to Thomas Dreier, Head of Global R&D at Landwells, LED technology is not only environmentally friendly but also highly cost-effective. With smart lighting solutions, energy use and costs can be reduced by up to 90%. Roundmans has invested heavily in the future potential of LED lighting, aiming to continue expanding energy-saving possibilities.
This Indian government order is a key part of Roundmans’ commitment under CEM8. With its growing focus on LED lighting and recent additions such as Dr. Tan Changlin, the company is well-positioned to meet its ambitious goals.
