According to IMSresearch, the shipment volume of Suntech Power increased by 25% QoQ. Therefore, it is speculated that Suntech's shipment figures have surpassed that of First Solar.
Suntech chairman Shi Zhengrong also expected that the company's annual shipments will reach 1.5Gw. Assuming cash, then its full-year shipment will surpass the first solar energy, becoming the first annual shipment champion. First Solar expects its own shipments to reach around 1.3Gw this year.
However, Chinese companies are not without weakness. Take Suntech Power as an example, its gross profit margin and net profit margin are not ideal.
In 2005, the company's gross profit margin was as high as 30.3%, but it dropped to 20% in five straight years. The net profit rate slipped from more than 10% five years ago to 5.1% last year. In the third quarter of this year, its gross profit margin is still only about 17%.
This is a great distance from the first solar company's financial figures. First Solar's financial report shows that the company's gross profit margin from 2007 to 2009 is between 45% and 50%, and the net profit rate is maintained at around 27.9% to 31%.
According to the analysis of the imeigu website, the current gross profit margin of Suntech Power is also lower than that of the first-line PV manufacturers. For example, profit margins of Yingli Green Energy, Trina Solar, Linyang New Energy and other companies in the third quarter of this year were 33.3%, 31.4% and 22.7%, respectively.
