Rohde & Schwarz Announces First Commercial 5G Channel Measurement Solution

Our work at the beginning of GSM is now continuing at the exponential level on the fifth generation mobile communication system (5G). Base station and terminal equipment manufacturers are facing the challenge of open time and location related wireless channels. This is why Rohde & Schwarz has developed a channel measurement solution for the 5G band.

The test system consists of a signal analyzer, a vector signal generator and R&S TS-5GCS test software. The user can select the corresponding signal analyzer and generator based on the frequency and bandwidth of the channel of interest.

On December 2, 2015, Munich – 5G features distinguish it from previous generations of mobile communication systems: on the one hand, the fifth generation mobile communication system will open up new possibilities for commercial wireless communication in the microwave and millimeter wave range. Band; on the other hand, it will expand the bandwidth of the useful channel. In order to make optimal use of new frequency bands and higher bandwidths, a comprehensive analysis of new wireless communication channels is required. Channel sounding will be the primary method of doing this.

High-band channel measurements can be easily accomplished using the R&S TS-5GCS channel probing software with the R&S FSW signal and spectrum analyzer and the R&S SMW vector signal generator. The R&S SMW200A as a source of detection up to 40 GHz, the R&S FSW as a receiver supports different frequency and bandwidth configuration options. Taking the R&S FSW85 as an example, the instrument can analyze the detection signal with a maximum frequency of 85 GHz without using an external mixer. The analysis bandwidth can be extended to 2 GHz by loading the R&S FSW-B2000 option. With an analysis frequency of 85 GHz and an analysis bandwidth of 2 GHz, it is unique in the market.

In order to measure broadband wireless signals between the transmitting and receiving ends, the user needs to know the exact transmission path characteristics. Channel measurement technology makes this need a reality by measuring the impulse response of a transmission channel or a mobile radio channel.

The R&S TS-5GCS PC application software provides channel impulse response and further provides specific information on the observed channel's impact on known signals. The effects of the wireless channel mainly include signal echoes caused by reflection, shadows of buildings, trees and weather. The R&S TS-5GCS software is based on MATLAB and automatically reads the I/Q data of the R&S FSW, which correlates the received signal with the original calibration sequence to obtain a channel impulse response. The data results of the test can also be presented graphically.

The R&S TS-5GCS software provides a variety of standard probing signals, such as chirp signals in the radar domain. Using such signals for channel probing allows the user to further optimize the spectral purity and peak-to-average ratio of the probing sequence. The detection signal can be played back directly via the R&S SMW200A signal generator.
