Gartner Lowers Global PC Shipment Expectations for the Second Half of the Year

September 1st International Report: Market research firm Gartner cut its global PC shipment expectations for the second half of the year due to uncertain economic prospects in the United States and Western Europe.

Gartner expects global PC shipments in the second half of this year will grow by 15.3%, 2% lower than previously expected. Gartner expects global PC shipments this year to be 367.8 million units, an increase of 19.2% from 308.3 million units last year. In May of this year, Gartner had expected global PC shipments to be 376.6 million units this year.

Gartner research director Ranjit Atwal said in a statement that the demand for PCs in mature markets has been declining. Due to the slow economic recovery in the United States and the economic problems in Europe, PC suppliers have been “cautious” this year.

Gartner believes that companies will not be too long to replace old PCs. Atwal said that delaying the replacement of obsolete PCs will increase the cost to enterprises when they finally adopt Microsoft Windows 7 PCs.

Gartner also expects netbook shipments to begin to decline after peaking at the end of 2009. Late last year, netbook shipments accounted for 20% of all mobile PCs; in the second quarter of this year, its shipments accounted for less than 18%. Gartner expects its share to only about 10% in 2014.

Gartner research analyst Raphael Vasquez said that the decline in netbook shipments is related to consumers' perception that netbooks are not as good as low-end laptops. He said that netbooks will be used in conjunction with standard notebooks, but the launch of tablets will threaten the netbook market.
