Gartner Cuts PC Shipments: China Demand Slows

Beijing time on March 4th afternoon (Jiang Junmu) Gartner reduced the previously estimated increase in PC shipments in 2011 by 5%, and said China's notebook shipments may decline.

Gartner currently expects global PC shipments in 2011 to be 387.8 million, an increase of 10.5% over 2010, instead of the previously expected 15.9%. And it is expected that in 2012 shipments will be 440.6 million, an increase of 13.6% over 2011, instead of the previous 14.8%.

The Gartner report pointed out that the decline in consumer demand for notebook computers is the main reason for the slowdown in PC shipments this year. Consumer interest has turned to tablet computers. And the demand for notebook computers in the Chinese market has also declined.

"We anticipate that users' enthusiasm for mobile PC replacement options will grow, such as iPads and other tablet PCs, which significantly slows down the shipment of mobile PCs to the home, especially in mature markets." George Hirfler, Research Director, Gartner (George Shiffler) said.

In the past five years, notebooks and netbooks have driven global PC shipments, with an average annual growth rate of 40%.

However, this may not necessarily be good news for tablet makers. Gartner pointed out that many consumers postponed plans to purchase any kind of PC until the new tablet PC went hot.
