Austrian Microelectronics has introduced the AS1119, the most advanced and compact LED dot matrix driver, which is mainly used for dot-matrix display in mobile phones, personal electronics and toys.
Its greatest advantage is that it only requires 9 mm2 of PCB space, and each LED has an 8-bit dimming control. No need to use external resistors, 8-bit analog current control can fine-tune each array to compensate for differences in brightness produced by different colors, and can also adjust the white balance of RGB LEDs. The AS1119 integrates 6 frames memory for small animations and also acts as a buffer to reduce the load on the host processor. The AS1119 is equipped with an on-board 320mA charge pump, which can provide power when the LED needs to exceed the voltage that the battery can provide, and can continue to operate in a low battery voltage environment, thereby providing the end user with an 80% longer battery life.
The driver's features also include 1 MHz I2C compatible interface control, open and short circuit LED error detection, and low-power shutdown currents. The AS1119 offers two operating modes for flexible design. The single/two-color mode can be used to drive the maximum number of LEDs in two 8x9 matrices. The RGB mode provides a 3x 5x6 matrix that can set the white balance by adjusting the analog current of each matrix.
The AS1119 uses Austrian Microelectronics' multipath technology called cross-plexing to achieve the result of only 18 lines required to drive 144 LEDs. The 36-pin WL-CSP 3x3 mm package operates from -40 to 85°C and operates from a supply voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V.
