Volkswagen, often referred to as the "god of cars," consistently achieves impressive sales figures across nearly all of its models. One standout example is the SAIC Volkswagen Tiguan, which has been particularly successful in the market since its introduction. However, what makes the Tiguan so appealing isn’t necessarily its cost-effectiveness but rather its unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and quality.
That said, the automotive landscape is ever-changing, and SAIC Volkswagen decided to take a different approach by introducing a new Tiguan aimed at offering better value for money. This new model isn’t a Tiguan L but rather an updated version of the original Tiguan, rebranded as the Tiguan Silk Road Edition. This affordable SUV is designed to appeal to a broader audience looking for a budget-friendly yet reliable vehicle.
The Tiguan Silk Road Edition made its debut in 2017 as part of SAIC Volkswagen's lineup. It’s essentially an enhanced version of the 2016 Tiguan. During the 2017 Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macau Auto Show, this model was showcased with an official price range of 1.998 million to 2.378 million yuan (approximately $280,000 to $330,000).
With a length of 4,506 mm, a width of 1,809 mm, a height of 1,685 mm, and an axle distance of 2,684 mm, the Tiguan Silk Road Edition offers a compact yet spacious interior. Its top speed reaches 192 km/h, providing adequate power for urban and suburban driving.
This model comes in four variations: the 280TSI Fashion Edition, Comfort Edition, and the 300TSI Fashion Edition and Comfort Edition. Under the hood, it features a turbocharged inline-four cylinder TSI engine paired with a DSG six-speed dual-clutch transmission, achieving a fuel efficiency of just 6.9 liters per 100 kilometers.
Equipped with premium features such as a leather multifunction steering wheel, panoramic electric sunroof, start-stop technology, and energy recovery, the Tiguan Silk Road Edition ensures both comfort and efficiency. For safety, it boasts a laser-welded five-star safety body structure with high-strength steel components, including 77% high-strength steel, 14% thermally formed ultra-high-strength steel, 2% ultra-high-strength steel, and 9% extra-high-strength steel, ensuring passengers are well protected.
Shanghai Volkswagen first introduced the Tiguan in 2009, giving it the Chinese name "Tiguan." The Silk Road, a historical route connecting East and West, symbolizes exploration and discovery. Similarly, the Tiguan Silk Road Edition aims to provide drivers with a path to new horizons, blending practicality with innovation. Will this model, with its competitive pricing and robust features, capture the hearts of more consumers? Only time will tell.
