In the blink of an eye, several years have passed. Once cool brands like Cool Open, KKTV, and LeTV are now fading into the past. In less than two years, Micro Whale has emerged as a favorite among young users, raising the question: what makes this brand so appealing to people of all ages? Is it its craftsmanship, quality, system, or entertainment style? In 2017, Micro Whale launched the new D series Smart Voice TV. I got my hands on the 55D model and hope to explore its design, video content, performance, and features through two articles, uncovering why it's so popular among users.
Unboxing
The packaging of the Micro Whale Smart Voice TV D series 55D clearly states its positioning as a "powerful and family-friendly" product. This aligns perfectly with the tastes of post-80s and post-90s generations who value good quality over high prices. As a post-90s user, I found that many of my classmates have chosen Micro Whale as their first smart TV.
Accessories
Upon opening the box, I was impressed by the strong packaging and the protective foam inside. The accessories included a sleek remote control with 12 buttons, made of plastic but with a smooth feel. What stood out was the inclusion of both a regular and a voice-enabled remote, supporting Bluetooth and infrared connections. With the latest Bluetooth 4.0 BLE module, it offers up to 12 meters of range and uses 90% less power than Bluetooth 3.0. It can also connect to Bluetooth gamepads, headsets, and more, offering a connected entertainment experience. Plus, the AI voice assistant allows for one-second command execution.
Installation
The stand feels solid and well-designed, featuring a matte texture that’s both visually appealing and tactilely pleasing. The base is stable and gives a sense of security. Assembly was straightforward, though handling a 55-inch TV was a bit nerve-wracking due to its weight. Once assembled, the back panel revealed a large metal surface for excellent heat dissipation. The HDMI, network, USB, and fiber optic ports were neatly arranged, making it easy to connect various devices. The USB 3.0 port offered fast transfer speeds, which is rare in this price range.
Details
The back of the TV includes a five-directional button for easier control when the remote is misplaced. The bracket design is bridge-style, adding stability and a modern look. The nano-spraying technology on the base gives it a metallic finish. The D series 55D follows the design language that won the 2017 German iF and Red Dot awards, with a black body and a classic gray bridge base that fits modern minimalist interiors.
First impressions of the D series were positive—its slim profile (10.9mm) gives it a light and agile look, while the black frame adds a seamless and elegant touch. The white “Whale†logo at the bottom is eye-catching. The one-piece construction ensures durability and stability. The screen features a 4K IPS panel with a 178° viewing angle and 6ms response time, delivering sharp and vibrant images, especially with HDR support.
After plugging in the power, I was ready for further testing. The TV is equipped with a 64-bit 4K chip, supports 60fps decoding, and has a quad-core A53 CPU and a six-core Mali-450 GPU, along with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. It also features deep AI voice capabilities. How does this configuration perform in terms of operating system, voice interaction, and audiovisual effects? Stay tuned for the next article where I’ll dive deeper into these aspects.
