In the blink of an eye, many once-cool brands like Cool Open, KKTV, and LeTV have faded into the past. Even less than two years ago, Micro Whale was a rising star among young users, quickly becoming a popular choice. But what makes this brand so appealing to people of all ages? Is it the craftsmanship, the quality, the system, or its entertainment style? In 2017, Micro Whale launched the new D series Smart Voice TV. I got my hands on the 55D model and decided to explore its design, performance, and features in two articles, aiming to uncover why it has become a favorite among consumers.
Unboxing
The packaging of the Micro Whale Smart Voice TV D series 55D is designed with a "Worse for Best Products with Excellent Value for Money" concept in mind. The young-oriented positioning is clearly visible on the box. This approach resonates well with post-80s and post-90s generations who are not necessarily chasing high prices but are willing to pay for real value. As a post-90s user myself, I’ve noticed that many of my classmates have chosen Micro Whale as their first TV purchase.
Inside the strong box, there's foam protection and various accessories. It's clear that the company cares about delivering a premium unboxing experience.
Accessories
The remote control of the D series 55-inch TV continues the sleek 12-button design. While it’s made of plastic, the feel is very satisfying. What stands out is that it comes with both a regular and a voice-enabled remote, supporting Bluetooth and infrared connections. With the latest Bluetooth 4.0 BLE module, it offers a 12m connection range while using 90% less power than Bluetooth 3.0. You can also connect Bluetooth gamepads, headsets, and other devices for a more immersive entertainment experience. Plus, the AI voice feature allows you to call up content with just one second of speech.
The stand feels solid and well-designed. Its herringbone base gives a modern look and a stable feel. The matte texture adds a nice touch both visually and in hand.
Installation
Setting up the TV was straightforward. After removing the screws, I attached the stand and placed the TV. Though it was a bit heavy, everything went smoothly. The back panel uses a large metal area for better heat dissipation. The ports—HDMI, network, USB, and fiber optic—are neatly arranged, making it easy to connect various devices. The USB 3.0 port is especially fast, which is rare in this price range.
Details
The back of the TV includes a five-directional button for easier operation when the remote is missing. The bracket design is bridge-style, enhancing stability and giving the TV a more elegant look. The nano-spraying technology on the base adds a metallic texture, making it both functional and stylish.
Design
The D series 55D follows the same design language as the 2017 iF and Red Dot award-winning K series. Its black color, paired with a space gray base, blends modern minimalism with a classic touch. The slim profile, officially 10.9mm, gives it an agile look, while the bright frame makes it feel seamless and elegant.
On the bottom, the Micro Whale logo catches the eye. The product uses a one-piece manufacturing process, ensuring durability and a sturdy build. The screen features a 4K IPS panel with a 178-degree viewing angle and 6ms response time, delivering excellent picture quality with HDR support.
After plugging in the power, I’m ready for the next test. The D series 55D is equipped with a 64-bit 4K chip, supports 60fps decoding, and includes a quad-core A53 CPU and a six-core Mali-450 GPU. It also has 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, along with deep AI voice capabilities. How does it perform in terms of operating system, voice interaction, and audiovisual effects?
