"Spiderman: Hero Returns VR" Review: Super Hero Show

Editorial View Interesting Part "An excellent sense of immersion and a great visual experience!" Discontented Part "While the graphics are impressive, the gameplay feels a bit short." "I wanted more than just a teaser—this almost feels like a commercial rather than a standalone game." "Is this a game or an ad for the upcoming 'Spider-Man' movie?" "Wouldn’t it be amazing to step into the shoes of your favorite superhero? With 'Spider-Man: The Return of Heroes' VR experience, you get a taste of what it’s like to swing through New York City as Spider-Man. This latest addition to the 'Spider-Man' franchise takes inspiration from the events of 'Captain America: Civil War,' where Peter Parker teams up with Tony Stark to face off against the Vulture. Reviews from sites like Rotten Tomatoes have been positive, and while this isn’t a full-length movie, it serves as a promotional tool for the upcoming cinematic release. If you’re a fan of Spider-Man, it’s worth checking out, even if it’s just a brief glimpse into the world of VR superheroes." After strapping on the VR headset, you’ll find yourself perched on the rooftop of a towering skyscraper. The surrounding environment looks incredibly detailed—the endless streams of roads below stretch out endlessly. Once you’ve suited up in your Spider-Man attire, you’re ready to begin your superhero adventure. Substitute a Sense of Play The gameplay is straightforward yet engaging. As Spider-Man, your primary ability revolves around shooting webs. There are three types of web-shooting techniques available in the game. First, there’s the precise, thin strand that can be fired quickly. Second, there’s the ball-shaped filament that requires energy storage and needs to be discharged after a short wind-up, exploding upon impact to deal area damage. Lastly, there’s the classic method of swinging by pulling yourself toward objects with your webs. Following a brief tutorial, the Vulture emerges, and you use your webs to hoist yourself onto a nearby crane. From this bird's-eye view of the city, you're tasked with fighting back against the Vulture. However, this isn’t going to be easy; the Vulture is no pushover. He knocks you down, and his advanced aircraft gives him the upper hand in combat. After some harassment, the Vulture escapes. As the Vulture retreats, you stabilize a nearby crane with explosive wires to prevent it from crashing and causing destruction. Then, you grab onto a passing helicopter and chase after the Vulture. Just as you're fully immersed in the action, the game abruptly ends. Endless Experience I must admit, when the game concluded, I felt somewhat frustrated. It was as though my powers had vanished mid-mission. But upon reflection, given that this is essentially a free promotional experience, expecting more might be unreasonable. Still, it was an enjoyable moment while it lasted. "Spider-Man: The Return of Heroes" VR is highly imaginative, and its overall quality is commendable. The sensation of shooting webs and swinging through the city is immersive, providing a thrilling experience. Initially, I worried about motion sickness, but surprisingly, there was no dizziness—just a heightened adrenaline rush. This suggests that if Marvel were to invest in creating a full-fledged VR game, it could be truly spectacular. With new iterations of Spider-Man games on traditional platforms already in development, Marvel has hinted at the potential for a complete VR Spider-Man experience in the near future. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. Overall, this VR experience is a fun, albeit short-lived, glimpse into the life of Spider-Man. It leaves you wanting more, which is perhaps the best compliment you can give to any teaser or promotional content.
