Researchers at the US Department of Agriculture, Indiana State University, and Purdue University have just published a paper that they are looking for ways to scare off birds that are close to the aircraft.
The research team sent three radio-controlled aircraft, one of which was a normal aircraft model, one disguised as a predator, and the last with flashing alternating pulsed LED lights at 2 Hz.
The results show that when the lights are flashing, the birds will quickly notice the aircraft and avoid it, which is better than pretending to be a predator.
It seems that only a simple thing to flash the LEDs can reduce the billions of dollars in the annual aviation industry. I think the airlines may adopt this solution after hearing this report!
