He claimed that China is on the verge of surpassing the United States in the field of artificial intelligence. "Some very talented people come from countries where the U.S. does not allow them to enter," Schmidt remarked. "Would you rather let them develop AI elsewhere, or would you prefer them to work here?" He specifically mentioned Iran, where some of the world's top computer scientists have been trained, and expressed hope that they could contribute to companies like Alphabet and Google.
For Schmidt, the key to advancing AI lies in national unity. He argued that collaboration between the government and private companies is more critical than regulatory oversight. While he acknowledged the need for regulation, he believed it should not stifle innovation. Instead, the U.S. government should develop a clear strategy to support AI development and work closely with the private sector.
DeepMind remains one of the leading AI research organizations, according to Schmidt. He noted that Alphabet's AI lab in London is at the forefront of developing super-intelligent systems. However, he also admitted that achieving true superintelligence is still several years away.
