Seoul Semiconductor, South Korea talks about LED business strategy

South Korea's Seoul Semiconductor (SeoulSemiconductor) held a press conference in Tokyo on October 21, 2010, and announced that it will strengthen white LEDs for lighting appliances and UV LEDs for medical and industrial applications. The total sales of the LED business, including LEDs for TV LCD panel backlights, will reach 5 trillion won in 2014, with the goal of becoming the world's top LED company. ). Since the company's sales in 2009 were about 450 billion won, it was necessary to increase sales by about 10 times. According to the company, its global market share in 2009 was 5.4%.

At present, the largest sales of Seoul Semiconductor are LEDs for LCD panel backlights, which are about 50%, followed by LEDs for lighting, about 30%, and the rest are indicators. It is estimated that about half of the sales in 2014 will come from LEDs for lighting. "The popularity of LEDs for lighting has only just begun. The scale of the lighting market is very large, so the prospect of LEDs for lighting is worth looking forward to" (Dike Shenxing). The reason why I hope to use it for lighting is because the structure of the LED market seems to change in the future. The backlight source of LCD TVs is currently rapidly LED. Although the market for LEDs for backlights is expanding, the number of LEDs installed on each LCD TV has decreased due to cost reduction requirements and increased LED energy efficiency. If the LEDization of LCD TVs progresses, it will not be long before the sales of LEDs for backlights will peak, so additional growth drivers are needed.

At the heart of Seoul Semiconductor's LEDs for lighting, the "Acriche" LED series, which can be directly lit by AC power. It is said that the luminous efficiency of the series named "A4" has reached 100lm/W and the R&D level has reached 150lm/W. Although Acriche has the advantage of not needing to use an AC-DC converter to illuminate, it will flash and turn off due to the time-varying and de-energizing of the AC power supply. Therefore, ICs that control the flashing of lights are currently being developed and are considered for use in combination with Acriche.

Regarding the ultraviolet LED, five kinds of products having emission wavelengths of 255 nm, 265 nm, 280 nm, 310 nm, and 340 nm have been supplied. "A number of LED manufacturers have introduced products close to 340nm" (Die Shenxing), but in the field of shorter wavelengths, there are almost no manufacturers that can compete with Seoul Semiconductor. In addition to fields such as sterilization, environmental analysis, and skin treatment, such ultraviolet LEDs are also considered to be combined with phosphors for use in white LEDs for backlights that improve color reproducibility. However, since the lifetime of phosphors that can be used in combination with ultraviolet LEDs is very short, and the price of ultraviolet LED chips is still expensive, it is still difficult to use them immediately for backlighting.

Increased production capacity by 1.5 times in 2011

At the press conference, Seoul Semiconductor also announced LED production capacity. At present, the production capacity of LED packaging is 1.5 billion per month, and the production capacity of packaging is the second in the world. The company is producing LED chips on the package in the head office, subsidiary SeoulOptodevice and US SET. In addition, it is also produced in a joint venture between Seoul Semiconductor and Taiwan's Huga Optotech. Despite this, "the self-sufficiency rate of LED chips is only about 60%" (dike extension). It is said that the self-sufficiency rate will continue to be around 60% in the future. This is because by combining with external procurement, if there is a lower-priced LED chip on the outside, an external chip can be used.

However, LED chips for backlights of liquid crystal televisions and LED chips for Acriche mentioned above are all produced by Seoul Optotodevice. In terms of UV LED chips, they are all produced by SET in the United States. That is, LED chips used in differentiated products with other companies are concentrated in their subordinate factories.

The LED plant in Ansan, South Korea, is currently constructing a fifth production line, scheduled to be completed in March 2011 and put into production in April 2011. In this way, the production capacity of the Ansan Plant will be expanded to 1.5 times. While expanding the production line, it is also planned to increase the area of ​​the sapphire substrate used in the LED chip production process. Currently using a 2-inch sapphire baseplate, it is estimated that a significant number of baseplates will be expanded to 4 inches in 2011.

In addition, Seoul Semiconductor is developing high-efficiency LEDs and laser components using amorphous GaN crystals. Will use the company's scientific advisor - the University of California, Santa Barbara to teach the technology developed by Nakamura Shuji. It is planned to start supplying LED samples at the end of 2011 and will try to achieve mass production in 2012 as much as possible. The embankment indicates that the LED using the non-polar GaN crystal was originally fabricated on the GaN substrate, but "in order to reduce the cost, it is hoped that it can be finally fabricated on the sapphire substrate".
