However, existing LED operating modes focus on low voltage (2-4 volts) and constant DC. When urban AC power is used to drive LED lights, a variable voltage constant current power supply including buck and steady current electronic components is required. In the AC-DC conversion process, 15-30% loss is inevitable, and Avoiding the substantial increase in the cost, weight and structural complexity of LED lighting fixtures. It is especially important that in order to give full play to the advantages of small LED size, the DC drive power module of the complicated LED is often compactly mounted inside the narrow lamp body together with the LED chip, and the LED chip and the power source are both heat sources. The ambient temperature rises, further reducing the operating efficiency and lifetime of the DC drive power supply.
Studies have shown that the complex DC drive power supply is affected by temperature, and the working life at peak efficiency is less than 10,000 hours, which is much lower than the working life of GaN LED chips (50,000-100,000 hours). Research and analysis shows that the life span of LED power supplies is becoming a fundamental source of many problems. In addition, the structure of many DC drive power supplies is not reasonable enough, power factor correction is less than 80%, and the high capacitance and inductive current caused by it interfere with the operation of the power grid in large-scale lighting systems.
The Jiawen Optoelectronics research team led by Dr. Xu Jian successfully developed the AC-LED technology and completely broke through this technical bottleneck: the basic concept is to use no additional (external chip) AC/DC conversion and rectifier circuits, instead of matching current limiting The resistors directly drive the LEDs with AC power, avoiding the loss of efficiency due to constant DC power, large size, complex structure, and lifetime limitations. The application of AC-LED eliminates the traditional constant voltage and constant current power supply, removes redundant electronic components, thereby reducing the cost, and has achieved great success in the miniaturization, reliability and extended working life of LED lamps.
It can be seen that, after a long time, AC-LED products will end the rapidly developing DC LED products. So far, only three companies in the United States, South Korea and Taiwan have AC-LED core technology and first-generation products. Gavin Optoelectronics' technological breakthroughs, patent applications and product development in this field have not only quickly filled the gap in AC-LED research in China.
