According to a recent report by Reuters on October 31, two well-informed sources revealed that Apple may no longer rely on Qualcomm for the chips in its upcoming iPhone and iPad models. This potential shift could mark a significant change in Apple's supply chain strategy, as it has long depended on Qualcomm for its modem technology.
The report suggests that this decision could impact the iPhone set to launch in fall 2018, although details remain uncertain. One of the sources explained that the conflict between Apple and Qualcomm stems from Qualcomm’s failure to provide essential software needed to test whether their chips are suitable for Apple devices. The dispute also escalated into a global legal battle over Qualcomm’s licensing agreements with Apple.
Qualcomm responded by stating that they have provided Apple with full chip testing for the iPhone and emphasized their commitment to supporting Apple’s new products, just as they do for other industry players. However, Apple seems to be exploring alternatives, which has raised questions about the future of their partnership.
Stacy Rasgon, an analyst at Bernstein, noted that Apple’s move is unexpected. Although Qualcomm has supplied modems for Apple devices for many years, the company has been gradually shifting some of its chip production to Intel. In 2015, Intel acquired a key company that helped strengthen its position in the market, making it a viable alternative to Qualcomm.
Despite this, it remains unclear if Apple will completely phase out Qualcomm. The company typically maintains multiple suppliers and develops different solutions to ensure flexibility. Similarly, Samsung has historically used multiple chip providers, including Qualcomm, but has occasionally moved away from them when new technologies emerge.
