Apple's new iPhone and iPad next year or abandoned Qualcomm chips

[Global Network Technology Comprehensive Report] According to a recent report by Reuters on October 31, two well-informed sources revealed that Apple may no longer use chips from Qualcomm in its upcoming iPhone and iPad models. This potential shift could mark a major change in Apple’s supply chain strategy and has sparked considerable interest in the tech world.

The report suggests that this decision might impact the iPhone set to launch in the fall of 2018, although details remain uncertain at this stage. One source explained that the conflict between Apple and Qualcomm centers around Qualcomm not providing essential software needed to test whether their chips are suitable for the iPhone. Additionally, the two companies have been involved in a global legal battle over Qualcomm's licensing terms for Apple. In response, Qualcomm stated that they have provided Apple with complete chip testing for the iPhone and emphasized their commitment to supporting Apple’s new devices, just as they do for other industry players.

Stacy Rasgon, an analyst at Bernstein, noted that Apple’s move was somewhat surprising. Although Qualcomm has supplied Apple with modems for many years, enabling its phones to connect to wireless data networks, Intel has recently taken on a larger role, supplying half of the iPhone’s chips. Rasgon pointed out that Intel acquired a company in 2015, which significantly boosted its ability to compete with Qualcomm. However, it remains unclear if Apple is planning to completely phase out Qualcomm, as the company often develops multiple options across different suppliers.

Rasgon also highlighted that Apple, like Samsung, is capable of supporting multiple solutions. A few years ago, when Samsung launched a new device, Qualcomm reportedly found out that Samsung had moved away from their products. (Internship compiling: Chen Yong due to reviewer: Liu Yang)

This development signals a possible shift in the smartphone chip market, with Apple potentially diversifying its supplier base. As the situation continues to evolve, all eyes will be on how this partnership plays out and what it means for the future of mobile technology.
