Huawei VR strategy surfaced: first to increase network speed for VR

VR is very hot right now, but the real mobilization experience requires a large enough network speed to support it. Therefore, Huawei's layout in VR is not like the practices of traditional hardware vendors such as HTC and Sony. The focus of the previous period is on the improvement of network speed.

In this regard, Wang Jun, president of Huawei's FDD product line, said at the Huawei analyst conference yesterday that VR will be one of the main ways of future social platforms, but the current network is not enough to support the good experience of VR, especially wireless VR. .

At present, the three major domestic operators are moving from 4G to 4G+. Under the 4G+ network, the mobile phone Internet access rate can be up to 300Mbps, and the upload rate can be up to 50Mbps. Huawei believes that such a speed may be supported for wired VR, but the experience is not optimal.

Xu Wenwei, Huawei's managing director and president of Strategy MarkeTIng, pointed out that VR must achieve a perfect virtual reality experience, processing up to 5.2Gbits of data per second, with a latency of less than 20ms.

Optoma, the world's leading projector manufacturer, recently launched a wireless VR helmet designed for the PC, freeing users from the constraints of cables. It revealed that it uses the 60GHz band Wi-Fi (the highest transmission rate is 6Gbps) to achieve VR effect.

Wang Jun further explained that the existing wireless network requires an average of 4 Mbp for a user to view 2K video, 18 Mbp for 4K video, and 175 Mbp for VR. In addition, the speed of the existing network is usually subject to different degrees of loss, so more network capacity is needed to support the transmission of VR high quality pictures.

So Huawei is stepping up the 4.5G and 5G layout. According to Wang Jun, the speed of 5G network is expected to reach 1Gbps, which can solve the dizziness caused by transmission delay.

Huawei is the pioneer of the 4.5G concept. Huawei has achieved a 1Gbps rate on the 4.5G network at least five years after the 5G arrival. Previously, Huawei helped TeliaSonera to launch the world's first 4.5G mobile network in Norway, breaking the peak rate of 1Gbps for the first time, laying the foundation for the business and application experience of the 5G era. In addition, Huawei also successfully demonstrated a 4.5G network in conjunction with Vodafone. With Huawei GigaRadio base stations, the peak user rate exceeds 1 Gbps.

According to the data, as of April 2016, there are 20 4.5G commercial and test networks in the world. By the end of this year, 60 4.5G commercial networks are expected to be deployed commercially.

Then, when Huawei introduced VR equipment, it is obviously after the commercial scale of 4.5G network. In this regard, Huawei's consumer business CEO Yu Chengdong previously said that Huawei will not miss VR, AR technology, but these technologies now seem mature business needs at least two to three years.

In addition to improving the network required for VR, Huawei has also made some deployments on application content. Last year, Huawei strategically invested in Storm Technology, which accounted for 3.89% of its shares and became its fifth largest shareholder. Soon after, Stormwind CEO Feng Xin revealed that Huawei's VR equipment will cooperate with Storm on both hardware and APP platforms. Huawei declined to comment.

According to internal channels, Huawei's investment in VR started very early. It is mainly handled by Huawei's Shanghai Research Institute. This year Huawei will have an action in VR, and it is very likely to launch a VR platform solution based on rate network transmission.
