On the one hand, excessive harmonic currents cause overload of the capacitor, and when the overheating is severe, resonance will burn the capacitor. On the other hand, a large number of harmonics in the system can also cause great harm to the electromechanical equipment. 1) In power transformers and power lines, current harmonics will increase copper losses, voltage harmonics will increase iron losses, and the overall effect is to increase the temperature of the transformer, affect its insulation capability, and cause a decrease in capacity margin. Harmonics can also cause motor torque ripple and increase noise.
3) Power capacitor bank: The standard specification of a general capacitor stipulates that its maximum current can only allow 35% overload, but in actual operation, due to the influence of harmonics, a severe overload often occurs. Since the impedance of the capacitor decreases with increasing frequency, the capacitor becomes a sink point when harmonics are generated, causing a large amount of current to flow in, resulting in overheating, increased dielectric stress, and even damage to the power capacitor. When the impedance of the capacitor and the line reach the resonance condition, vibration, short circuit, overcurrent, and noise may occur.
4) Switchgear: Due to the presence of harmonic currents, the switchgear generates a very high di/dt rate of change of current at the instant of starting, resulting in an increase in the peak value of the transient recovery voltage, which will destroy the insulation.
5) Protection of electrical appliances: Harmonic currents are contained in the current and additional torque must be generated to change the operating characteristics of the electrical appliances and thus cause malfunctions.
6) Meters: Meters and other meters, due to harmonics will cause the induction dial to produce additional electromagnetic torque, cause errors, reduce accuracy.
