South Korean smart grid roadmap drawing completed

Under the auspices of Minister of Knowledge Economy Minister Lee Yun-ho, the Seoul Electric Power Co., Ltd. held a ceremony to establish a smart grid construction plan implementation committee on the 31st and formulated a roadmap for the establishment of a smart grid. On the same day, people from power companies, telecommunications companies, home appliance companies, automobiles, and energy companies participated in the day's activities.

The smart grid "smart grid" refers to a power system that can connect millions of sensors to an advanced communications and data acquisition system. This system will use distributed computing systems to provide real-time analysis. Simply put, the integration of the power grid and information technology, using the power grid that is currently used, combined with information technology (IT), consumers can effectively use the power supply and demand system to achieve the purpose of saving power resources.

Difference between smart grid and traditional grid What is the difference between smart grid and traditional grid? According to experts, “The electric power industry has four production processes: power generation, transmission, distribution, electricity sales, and customer service. The key to the smart grid is to sum up with the user’s interaction in a single sentence, and to reflect the user’s needs on the grid in a timely manner. The aim is to increase the reliability and availability of the entire power grid while continuously reducing costs and improving efficiency."

First of all, from the standpoint of the power company, establishing a smart grid can grasp the peak and non-peak periods of power consumption and, on this basis, impose equalized tariffs. The price of electricity is raised at the time when the power consumption reaches a peak, and the electricity cost is reduced during late hours when the power consumption is low. In this way, it can serve to disperse power consumption and effectively distribute the electricity produced.

From the consumer's point of view, the time can be chosen to use electricity at the lowest price. For example, using a washing machine at a relatively late hour of the night and an electric vehicle that will be used in the future can also charge the battery late at night. The government and power companies believe that after the establishment of a smart grid system, the amount of electricity used in a year can be reduced by at least 6%, which is equivalent to 1.8 trillion won.

It is not easy to build a nationwide smart grid with a nationwide smart grid, and large-scale investment in cutting-edge information technology is required. The South Korean government decided to establish the first smart grid in the world by 2030. South Korea is so confident that it is due to its absolute advantage in power, home appliances, communications and information technology.

South Korea's decision to promote the smart grid is justified. First, the smart grid can effectively use electricity and receive the same benefits as building a power generation facility. South Korea has invested a huge budget every year to build a power production facility. After building a smart grid, it can disperse power consumption time. The peak power needs can be reduced by 7 million kilowatts, which can reduce the investment cost of building a power station by KRW 1 trillion.

The second is to connect power resources such as wind and sunlight to the grid. After building a smart grid, it can store and sell electricity from small-scale equipment such as fuel cells.

Third, at present, all countries in the world are developing this advanced technology. If they are able to get ahead of themselves, they will be the main force for the future development of the country.

Smart Grid Roadmap The South Korean government will designate a smart grid demonstration city by 2011 and complete the smart grid construction plan by 2030. The Smart Grid Promotion Committee will prepare a basic plan by the end of August this year and finalize the road map by the end of November.
