For optimal performance, CNC machines require advanced position control, speed regulation, and reliable servo motors along with efficient mechanical transmission systems. These features ensure that the machine can perform complex operations with precision and consistency.
Although different CNC machines serve various purposes, their feed servo systems generally share common requirements. One of the key characteristics is the ability to operate in both forward and reverse directions without any backlash or loss of motion during direction changes. This ensures smooth and accurate movement, especially when the machine table needs to change direction frequently during the machining process.
Another important requirement is a wide speed range. To accommodate varying processing conditions—such as different materials, tool types, and cutting methods—the feed system must be capable of adjusting speed continuously. This allows the machine to handle a variety of tasks efficiently. In advanced systems, the feed rate can be adjusted from 0 to 240 μm/min with a pulse equivalent of 1 μm, while standard CNC machines typically operate within a range of 0 to 24 m/min.
At zero speed, when the machine is stationary, the motor must still maintain electromagnetic torque to ensure positioning accuracy. This means the position servo system consists of two main parts: a speed control unit and a position control loop. While some systems aim for a very wide speed range, it's more practical to focus on reliability and stability. For most applications, a 1:20,000 speed range is sufficient, with the speed control unit operating within a 1:1,000 range to keep the system simple and robust.
Advanced systems, such as those used in experimental setups, may have even wider ranges, up to 1:100,000. However, the core requirement remains the same: the servo system must maintain consistent feed speed under different load conditions or changing cutting environments. A well-designed system should minimize speed fluctuations due to load variations. Ideally, the static speed drop should be less than 5%, and the dynamic speed drop should not exceed 10% when the rated torque changes.
