Korean media Money Today quoted the city's IHS data as saying that Samsung's first quarter of 2016 in the LED packaging market, with a revenue of 241 million US dollars, scored 6.1% market share. It is the third largest after the 14.1% of Nichia, the leading LED industry leader, and 8.1% of the second brother, Osram.
In the past period, the global LED market has been dominated by Nichia, Osram and Philips related company Lumileds. In 2015, Samsung ranked US$954 million in revenues after Nichia ($2,284 million), OSRAM ($1,170 million) and Lumileds ($1,174 million). But in the first quarter, Samsung defeated Lumileds as the third brother.
It is reported that Samsung plans to have more differentiated products to gain the leading role in the LED market. Recently, CSPLED's new Fx-CSP (Flexible Chip Scale Package) has been introduced. This product uses resin as a substrate material, from general sidelights to high-gloss headlights, as long as it is applied to the exterior of the car. .
Compared with the ceramic substrate used in the past, Samsung's new products have better heat dissipation, so the stability and light efficiency are also higher. In addition, through the chip and packaging technology and flexible circuit board technology, different arrangements can be adapted to different lighting configurations. Samsung pointed out that the product has now received orders for small and medium-sized automotive headlamps from global automotive parts manufacturers.
On the other hand, Samsung obtained UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certification in May. UL is an independent product safety certification body established in 1894 with a head office in Illinois, USA. UL's main business is product safety, and it also establishes standards and test procedures for many products, raw materials, parts, tools and equipment. When exporting to the United States, there are quite a few cases where UL is required for production and sales logistics channels.
The analysis believes that the LED market will continue to maintain steady growth. IHS pointed out that taking representative GaN LEDs as an example, its market size will expand from US$14.4 billion in 2016 to US$17 billion in 2021. The DRAM-centric memory market is currently caught in the negative growth concerns.
In this respect, the non-memory (system LSI) market is in a better condition. Therefore, although Samsung has a market share of nearly 75% in the memory market, it is actively cultivating non-memory businesses.
At present, Samsung's first position in non-memory products is the display driver chip (DDI) and the IC chip mounted on the credit card. As the AP of the smart phone mind role, Qualcomm is currently the market leader, while Samsung is ranked fifth. Samsung has won the title of second brother in the image sensor (CIS) market where Sony occupies half of the country.
Based on the technical strength of cutting-edge micro-processes, Samsung actively cultivates the system LSI department. According to IHS data, Samsung's fast-growing wafer foundry is rapidly emerging. In 2014, its revenue of $604 million was four times in just one year, and its revenue in 2015 was $2.529 billion.
Although Samsung's current foundry performance is still only one-tenth of the world's leading TSMC, Samsung plans to expand its performance with exclusive technology as a weapon starting in 2016. The South Korean industry believes that Samsung will continue to grow its performance with the 14nm 1st generation FinFET process. Starting in 2016, Samsung will begin to adopt the second generation process with reduced energy consumption and improved performance.
