In Kolkata, the Climate Group and HSBC have launched an outdoor LED lighting project that reduces costs and emissions.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), the non-governmental international organization Climate Group and HSBC (HSBC) have launched India's largest LED streetlight pilot project in Kolkata. This LED light pilot will install 270 LED street lights on major sections of the city. This project, presented in April 2010, is designed to help KWC understand that in the next few years, new street lights will reduce large energy costs and reduce urban emissions. The information obtained from it will be shared with other cities in India and the world.
The project will be completed by KMC, the Government of India Energy Efficiency Board (BEE), West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL), and the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) in the context of the Climate Group's overall situation. The cost of this project is shared by both KMC and BEE.
The start of the trial is only part of the Climate Group's international “Save Light†project, funded by HSBC, and it has more than 10 pilots including Hong Kong, New York, London, Delicate, Tianjin and Toronto. .
Kolkata is not the only city in India that is trying to use LED technology: Tana, located in Maharashtra, hopes to be selected as a pilot in the next national pilot selection. KMC's municipal commissioner, Arnab Roy, said: “Kolkata has 180,000 street lights, so there is a potential need for large-scale use of this clean technology. We look forward to working with the members of The Climate Group to clean this. The broad benefits of technology, especially energy conservation and carbon savings, have a better understanding."

As time goes by, it also saves a lot of resources for the city and people."

In October 2010, the first 20 Philips Lumec RoadStar LED street lights were installed on the road in Kolkata. Beginning in December, there will be a 12-month monitoring phase to measure the performance of these products, including brightness, uniformity, color warming and energy savings.
The results of the survey from the Calcutta pilot project will confirm whether the new LED lights meet India's street lighting standards and whether it can provide a basis for a possible expansion strategy.
The information obtained from the pilot will also be used as a one-size global report that will be used to compare with other Climate Group pilots and assess each city's energy savings potential and greenhouse gas reductions.
For the next period of time, The Climate Group and KMC will hold a series of capacity building workshops on the development potential of LEDs in related companies, development agencies, power supply companies, large homeowners and other organizations.
