Create a demonstration of intelligent laboratory for radioactive sample detection of nuclear materials

China is one of the few countries in the world with a relatively complete nuclear industry system. With the development of nuclear power, medicine, chemistry, biology and other disciplines, it is particularly important to build advanced scientific research reactors. In order to ensure the safety of nuclear tests, the stable use of nuclear energy, and the implementation of the people-oriented scientific development concept, China has established a uranium hydrometallurgical plant, an isotope separation plant, a uranium conversion plant, a nuclear fuel component manufacturing plant, a post-treatment plant and a number of research and design institutes. Therefore, China’s nuclear test equipment has grown from scratch and has achieved great development.

Nowadays, scientists are exploring how to use advanced intelligent testing methods to prevent researchers from directly contacting dangerous samples, thereby reducing the risk of nuclear radiation and improving the reliability of the test. It is also an important issue in the country. The radioactive sample sampling, testing and cleaning test equipment developed by Beigang has become one of the important equipments in the field of nuclear reagent testing. The device can replace the series of sample inspection actions required by the laboratory by mechanization, realize the complete separation of the personnel from the test environment during the nuclear reagent inspection process, and avoid the radiation risk caused by the close contact between the scientific researcher and the reagent.

Integrated structural design

The device is mainly composed of a support and control cabinet, an upper/lower running rabbit system (Note 1), a sample transfer robot , a sample identification device, a sample temporary storage position, a sample component detecting device, a cap opening device and a control system, etc. Automated loading/unloading of sample reagents, sample bottle open cap detection after sample identification, sample recovery and unloading after testing, and automation of container cleaning.

Note 1: The rabbit running system refers to a small container containing irradiated samples by pneumatic or hydraulic driving, which is quickly sent to the nuclear reactor through the pipeline to irradiate the sample, and then returns to the laboratory device after irradiation. The sample being transported is called a "rabbit".

Equipment operation route

First, the sample is supplied by the loading system, the robot grabs the sample to the position to be opened, and the sample cap is opened by the opening mechanism, and then the robot transfers the sample to the detection position, which is measured by a professional instrument, and the relevant parameters are recorded online. The cleaning solution is then injected into the vial. After sufficient cleaning, the sample vial is blown dry by compressed air. Then tighten the cap and cut it to the running rabbit system to prepare a new round of test cycle.

Software and hardware integration system

The control system works with the robot to ensure the intelligent operation of the experiment. Due to the small volume of the experimental sample, the numerous operation steps, the compact operation space, and the corrosive environment, the conventional grasping robot cannot exert its effectiveness in this scenario. However, the device uses an IP56-class, lightweight, six-axis robot for micro-small sample transfer in a compact space. Through the control system configuration, the instant information sensing and corresponding parameter configuration of each operation station and operating device can be adjusted online, and the operation steps of accurately identifying and transferring samples can be realized only by starting an external software client. The parameters of the experimental process can be monitored online to realize the intelligence of the detection process.

Multiple protections ensure process safety

The whole machine material is made of 316L high-protection metal. All cables are sealed with 316L gland (Note 2). In addition to IP56 protection grade, the robot specially customizes special material protective clothing to protect the robot to ensure the equipment during the experiment. The structure is protected from acid mist and extends the life of the equipment.

Note 2: Glan, also known as cable gland, cable gland, is widely used in the fixing and protection of wire and cable for mechanical equipment, ship electrical and anti-corrosion equipment.

Back-end cleaning measures for operational integrity

The reagent bottle used for the test has a residual sample. If it is not cleaned in time, it will directly affect the test result of the subsequent sample, so the cleaning of the reagent bottle is very important. The detection device is equipped with a cleaning function, which can perform two steps of solvent cleaning and drying operation on the reagent bottle. The whole test device realizes a complete testing process, avoiding the environmental pollution and personnel harm caused by the removal of the reagent bottle and cleaning. The test process personnel are completely isolated from the sample.
