Analyze the COB technology of overseas LED package giants

There are a wide variety of chip-on-board ( COB ) LED arrays that are constantly evolving. This includes the development of larger components with smaller illuminating surfaces, brighter LEDs and maximum luminous flux output.
Luminus Devices, Philips Lumileds and CREE have recently released technical bulletins to improve lumen output for small and large LED packages. Cree has announced a high-brightness LED with a 23nm light-emitting surface (LES) and an LED with a 30nm light-emitting surface for the CXA series. Lumileds announced that its overall COB product line performance will increase by 10%. LuminusDevices entered the COB market segment for the first time with the Xnova series of products, opening up a new way for general solid-state lighting applications.
Cree CXA3590 and CXA3070
Cree's CXA3070LED is now updated with its 23mm series, and the CXA3070LED performance is increased to 11,000 lumens at 85° operating temperature. Solid-state lighting manufacturers who have used the CXA3050LED before, can use this new product in existing designs without too much or no change to provide a higher performance product.
"The high-performance CXA3070 LED array helps us achieve metal halide replacement, resulting in higher efficiency and longevity," said David Gershaw, president of RemPhosTechnologies LLC. “CreeCXALED arrays set the industry standard for integrated arrays, providing better efficacy, reliability and light output.”
At the same time, the CXA3590 is the most powerful COBLED from Cree, offering 16,225 lumens of output, designed to replace the 250W metal halide source. “We are delighted that Cree has expanded its CXA series so that we can develop more lighting applications with a single, easy-to-use platform,” said David Lin, General Manager of YahJuangLightingTechnology. The CXA3590LED helps us develop high lumen lighting applications with a single LED, and it can take hundreds of other LEDs to achieve this.
Lumileds subverts COB performance
In the lighting show in May, Philips Lumileds began to enter the COB market and released 9, 13, or 15 mm LED light-emitting surfaces (LES) and other devices. “In just one quarter, we have improved the performance of LuxeonCOB by more than 10%, which means that the lumen output and light efficiency upgrade of our products is very fast,” said EricSenders, director of product line of Philips Lumileds.
PhilipsLumileds' LuxeonCOB series
The product spans from 1000 to 7000 lumens and has a luminous efficacy of up to 130 lumens per watt. The 9mm COB array has a luminous efficacy of 100 lumens per watt under warm white light and a luminous flux of 2200 lumens. According to the company, its metal substrate provides better heat dissipation and provides solid-state lighting manufacturers with 40% smaller heat sinks.
Luminus enters the COB market
Luminus entered the COB Technology Arena and there were some surprises. The company previously focused on manufacturing larger industrial LED chips for high lumen output applications. In fact, the company published a feature article on single-chip transmitters in May this year, which questioned the value proposition of COB technology.
Luminus has been acquired by Sanan subsidiary Lightera. The new XnovaLED series is a joint effort between Lightera and Luminus. A spokesperson for the company said: "This represents Luminus's change in general lighting direction." Luminus will continue to offer larger chips for entertainment, display, medical, UV and other specialized applications.
Luminus Xnova LED Series
The Luminus XnovaLED series debuted at the Hong Kong Lighting Fair this week. Products range from 350 to 10,000 lumens. The cool white efficiency is 134 lm/W, the warm white efficiency is 120 lm/W. The color rendering index ranges from 75 to 95.
“The Luminus XnovaLED series has enabled LED technology to be better adopted by the mainstream market, providing our customers with superior technical performance and value for money.” Luminus Chairman and CEOdecaiSun said: “The world's leading lighting company with our new technology Based on this, they have begun to design their next generation lighting applications."
