AnalogicTech has announced the latest AAT1270 in the flash light-emitting diode (LED) product line, which provides up to 500mA for two LEDs and up to 1A for one LED. The product will be used in mobile phones with video recording capabilities to support a new generation of high current/high brightness flash LEDs. The AAT1270 step-up current regulator provides the high current required in a 3 x 3mm STDFN package to support flash illumination of higher resolution charge coupled device (CCD) image sensors.
The dual AAT1270 features a high efficiency DC/DC boost converter with small magnets. No external Schottky diode is required. Its switching speed of up to 2MHz and low input current ripple support the use of a low profile (0.9mm) 1μH inductor. The AAT1270 is powered by a single Li-Ion battery, and up to 85% efficiency extends battery life.
The AAT1270 gives designers the flexibility to control flash and film mode operation with a single external resistor to set the full-scale flash LED current. The default current value when applied in film mode is set at a current ratio of 7.3:1. In addition, the film mode current can be programmed to 15 other ratios via AnalogicTech's proprietary single-wire simple serial control (S2Cwire) interface.
To prevent thermal damage to the flash LED, the AAT1270 is equipped with a user-programmable safety timer that stops flash activity for a set length of time. A separate flash support pin activates the flash/flash operation and safety timer simultaneously. The AAT1270 is also equipped with an asynchronous flash suppression pin that reduces the flash current into the capture mode value during high battery demand.
To protect the device, the AAT1270 also adds overvoltage, short-circuit, and over-temperature protection. The embedded line prevents excessive current surges during startup. The auto-shutdown function reduces the quiescent current to less than 1.0μA.
Price and availability
The AAT1270 is specified over the -40°C to +85°C temperature range and is available in a Pb-free, 3 x 3mm, 14-pin STDFN package. The unit price is $1.42 per unit when the order quantity is 1,000. In the fourth quarter of 2007, Analogic plans to introduce the I2C serial interface programmable AAT1272, and in the first quarter of 2008, the AS2Cwire serial interface programmable AAT1271 was introduced.
