With the introduction of the iPhone X featuring an AMOLED display, the global OLED market has experienced a significant boom. Demand for AMOLED panels is now on the rise, with shipments expected to more than triple in 2022. This surge is driven by the increasing adoption of AMOLED technology in smartphones and other devices.
Active Organic Light-Emitting Diode (AMOLED) screens are becoming increasingly popular, especially as screen sizes grow. Larger displays offer better visual experiences, which is fueling stronger future demand. The trend is not limited to smartphones—AMOLED technology is also gaining traction in smartwatches, tablets, and even automotive applications.

According to industry reports, Business Korea cited that AMOLED panel shipments reached approximately 474 million units this year, and are projected to hit 1.154 billion units in 2022—an increase of over 300%. This growth reflects the rising preference for AMOLED displays across various consumer electronics.
The iPhone X marked a turning point for AMOLED adoption in smartphones, and shipments are expected to grow by 12.3% this year. In 2018 and 2019, the market saw strong growth, with shipment increases of 34.1% and 39.3%, respectively. This was largely due to improved visibility and higher penetration rates of AMOLED screens in smartwatches and tablets.
Samsung Display currently holds a dominant position in the small-size AMOLED market, with a market share of at least 98.5%. To maintain its leadership, the company plans to boost capital expenditures from 14.1 trillion won (around $12.6 billion) to 16 trillion won this year. This investment underscores Samsung's confidence in the long-term potential of AMOLED technology.
Recent reports suggest that Apple may launch three new iPhones in 2023, two of which could feature OLED screens. These models are expected to have 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch or 6.3-inch displays, while the third may use a 6.1-inch LCD screen. This move further highlights the growing importance of AMOLED technology in the smartphone industry.
